Electric deregulation is an energy sector restructuring program that was undertaken by different states in America. The aim of this policy was to remove monopolies that existed in the years that preceded deregulation. The monopolies used to control the entire energy market and had been overriding powers over the supply and pricing of electricity, and at times they abused these powers to charge excessively. However, all this changed with the coming of the deregulation era which brought with it many benefits to energy consumers, especially to the business customers. Lock in a Low Power Rate now While Rates are Low – The electric service providers also periodically offer special deals and opportunities to their customers whereby they can lock in a low rate for an extended period of time – in some cases, up to three years. This can be a very prudent step to take. Texas electric rates are lower right now than they were a decade ago, even prior to deregulation. However, these low rates will not last forever, given the predicted rate hikes (due to fewer power plants being constructed despite population increase and with that, an increased demand for electricity). So we are encouraging people to “lock in the low rate” option to avoid future rate increases.
